New collaboration album by Merzbow & Bastard Noise on Relapse 'Retribution By ALl Other Creatures' - physical preorders up, entire album streaming now at bastardnoisemerzbow.bandcamp.com/album/retribution-by-all-other-creatures'Voice Pie' by Merzbow/Bastard Noise from back in 1996 was one of the first Merzbow releases I ever bought - however I think that was more of a split with no actual collaboration. Not sure if the two artists have done anything else together since?

‘Voice Pie’ is indeed a split, not a collaboration. As far as I know, the only other thing they’d done prior to this new collab (which I’m looking forward to listening to on Bandcamp) is a joint track in this Bastard Noise CD box: www.discogs.com/release/1712673-Bastard-Noise-Our-Earths-Blood-IV. I haven’t heard it, but I think I’ve read somewhere it’s a live collaboration.

Started listening to this collaboration but really not a fan of the vocals.

I also didn't like the vocals too much. Maybe they'd grow on me with repeated listens. The music is pretty good though. I wish the collab with Arcane Device was on Bandcamp. I'm listening to Arcane Device's 'Also Sprach Zarathustra' CD now and I like it a lot. It's kind of an experimental ambient album, often with a dark atmosphere. It's quite monolithic. Based on the samples, the Merzbow/AD CD is very different though, of course.

I think the Slowdown series might be at an end now because I saw this photo - Has anyone heard anything about this box? Haven't seen anything. It was from a retweet on Slowdown twitter. There is another photo which shows the open box and you can see it contains five 6 CD boxes (the normal re-issue series from Arrangement to last one After Hours and then also has the 5 CD box which has all the recent Merzbow albums that were released on Slowdown). I have the 60 CD box so am a little tempted to get this 35CD box too but haven't seen any news or announcement. Will keep checking Soundohm to see if they have it (that's where I got the 60xCD one)

If true, that's super bad planning to release a 5 boxset collection, then a few months later replace it with a 6 boxset edition. Or are they going to keep doing this? Maybe they'll just keep the series going, and keep expanding the size of the second collection every few months?

Just saw this on the Slowdown website about the 35 CD box - SDRSW145 Merzbow『35 CD BOX』
It doesn't really mention if this is the end of the series but it's going to be released in October this year. Hopefully Soundohm will be stocking it.

According to their website, menstrualrecordings are going to release the following on CD (no timeline is given): 'Vratya Southward', 'Psychorazer', 'Paradise Pachinko' and 'Antimonument'. I'm stoked about 'Paradise Pachinko', since that's the only one I don't have ('Vratya Southward' is included in the 'Merzbox).

That's interesting to know! Out of that lot, Vratya Southward and Antimonument are probably the two that I'd pick up, I do have all of them but there's something about having an album as it's own standalone release rather than in a box set. Am I right in saying the CD edition of Antimonument in the A5 card folder is an unofficial release? Good news for a lot of people though, Psychorazer and Paradise pachinko are rare as hell! I just hope these are digipaks/jewel cases rather than some of the plastic sleeve jobs Menstrual have done in the past

Yes, the 'Antimonument' CD is a bootleg. That's why the booklet of 'Venereology' says "Fuck! for Artdirecte", which was the label that released it (Art Directe, to be precise).

Seems Slowdown aren't done yet, there's another 6CD box on the way including brand new unreleased albums, as well as Mukomodulator that came out early last year and some works previously available on soundcloud. tower.jp/item/5560633/Fantail-VisionThe merzbow wiki lists another upcoming box too, but I can't find any more details

This Fantail one looks really great. With the New Ear Control box I found something about it on Amazon Japan. It's the 16th boxed set in the archive series. Going to Japan this December so might pick up the Fantail box then, might wait and see if they make another multiple CD box for the other archive boxes though. Lots of stuff coming out soon! amazon

Slowdown have put up the New Ear Control on their site now. It does say "This is the last chronological archive". If that is true why did they release the 35 CD box? Why not just wait a bit and do a 41 CD box? Or 47 CD including the other new one coming out?

It does seem weird that they chose to include 2017-2020 in the box rather than New Ear Control. They could have tied up all the loose ends and started a new box out of all new albums. I always found it odd that they did the 3RENSA box and then released a 5th remix album afterwards too, but there ya go...

Yeah definitely. That's a good point about the 3RENSA extra 5th disc. I might save up and get the New Ear Control and Fantail boxes at the same time then.

Soundohm have the 35 CD box available to purchase (pre-order) - SOUNDOHMIt has free postage and works out at about £6 per CD which isn't too bad. They also have the New Ear Control box.

Just came on here to post about that LP as I just saw it. Listening to the sample track now and it sounds pretty good. Hopefully there will be some UK distribution if it's 500 copies.

One for early 2023: a 2LP from MASSACRE (Anton Ponomarev & Anton Obrazeena) in collaboration with Merzbow and Alex Buess - on WV Sorcerer Productions.

I got the new Coda CD with Richard Pinhas on Bam Balam. I have three of their other collaborations: Keio Line, Rhizome and Paris 2008. They were all late additions to my Merzcollection. I had assumed that I wouldn’t like them but I was totally wrong. That’s one of the things that I like about Merzbow: the element of surprise. The new one is different too. Firstly, there are other musicians: Oren Ambarchi, Florian Tatard (accordian) and Senza Testa (synths). The sound is very collective. For example, I can’t tell what Richard Pinhas is doing. I think Merzbow contributes some pulses of fuzz and possibly some synth-like bleeps. It sounds like a sci-fi documentary. Imagine travelling past celestial nebulae, in and out of Hubble-like images, and you get the picture. It’s very pretty. Not at all the standard Merzbow release – if such a thing exists.

Didn't realise that was out yet! Will definitely track it down. I agree with what you said about Pinhas and artists in collaboration, I saw him live one time supporting Sax Ruins, his solo set was kind of bland in a way, lots of layers and nice ambience but that was about it. He later joined Sax Ruins on stage though, and what he brought to that performance was pretty phenomenal!

I had ‘Keio Line’ but ended up trading it for another CD. My problem with it was the same problem I have with Pinhas’ later solo works: that ambient guitar sound that’s so typical of him gets uninteresting for me pretty fast. I like it for a short while, but after that, because it doesn’t change, it can’t hold my attention any longer. It’s a shame, cause his album covers are usually great. I wish I liked the music that goes with them that much too. That said, I do like his first two solo albums, ‘Rhizosphere’ and ‘Chronolyse’, but they are very different. And of course he’s well known for Heldon, but other than a couple tracks and parts of tracks, I’m not a fan of Heldon either.

Got a bunch of new releases from Old Europa Cafe the other day, one of them being the new CD edition of Flesh Metal Orgasm. I completely forgot I had the 2010 Blossoming Noise Cassette version until a moment ago, to be honest I've hardly listened to it, but it was well worth picking up the CD version- an interesting album, kind of represents a point where 80s Merzbow was becoming 90s Merzbow.

I got the Flesh Metal CD reissue too. I had forgotten that it was recorded in 1988. From then to Metalvelodrome is probably my favourite period. It has some nice dirty analog textures. When it was released, I had John Coltrane’s Ascension on rotation. Blimey, if I’d heard this instead... Was anyone here listening to Merzbow in the 80s?

I would happily buy that on vinyl if it wasn't so insanely expensive. It's £60 direct from label (including postage) and about the same from UK distributor.

There's (another) re-release of Pulse Demon on the way, this time it's a CD courtesy of Old Europa Cafe, especially remastered by Akita for CD, with a bonus track.

The 4 CDs from Menstrual recordings are now out. They all have really terrible artwork which is a shame. Looks like some crappy text warp effect on an old word processor - www.menstrualrecordings.org/index2.htmI'll get Paradise Pachinko and Psychorazer though.
