Nice. This previously came out in the 'Lowest Music & Arts' 10 LP boxset, right? Fingers crossed the other records in that set will get the solo CD release treatment, as that's way out of my price range (plus vinyl is not the best sound quality anyway)

That's great news! The more of these CD reissues the merrier in my opinion, I really hope others get the CD digipak treatment. Sounds great from the first quick listen, and I love the artwork.

Yes, this album was included in that 10 LP box set. A lot of that material, by the way, was partially or fully included in the Merzbox as well, which I find quite pointless and which is why I can't justify buying the damn thing. I'm also glad to see this CD released and hope the recent practice of re-releasing early/earlier works will continue.

I own a copy of the boxset, but only because someone was selling it very cheap and it felt worth having as a collectors item as its pretty limited. I've still not listened to it... It does seem a strange idea to rerelease rare material in another form that's not easily obtainable or readily available to the causal listener either, so there's really only a select few that have managed to hear those tapes.

Has anyone listened to this? It's absolutely remarkable, I am seriously impressed with this album! for something 30+ years old it sounds so fresh and exciting. Largely guitar based, like super de-tuned slack strings and Sunn O))) kind of distortion, psychedelic slide guitar with huge amounts of delay and reverb. There's also a surprising (to me anyway) attention to composition, with tracks that purposefully stride in certain directions... experimentation with crazy tremolo effects, lumbering rhythms, drum machine beats. It may sound like a weird comparison, but some of it reminds me of the swampy kind of psych/punk The Butthole Surfers put out in the early part of their career. I'm yet to receive the CD digipak direct from the label, but downloaded from bandcamp as part of the pre-order. Can't recommend it enough
Would love to hear more from around the same time, 'Mechanization Takes Command' from the same year is fantastic too.

I'm also still waiting for the CD, so I haven't heard it yet. What you wrote sounds very promising! According to the label's website, the CD was released on 20 December, so I'm hoping we'll get it soon.

According to the label's Facebook page, they only actually received stock of the CD on 9th January.

Got the CD today, and it's great stuff. Very 'musical' without being melodic. I'm a big fan of the early pre-harsh noise stuff - so varied and inventive. Don't get me wrong, I like the super noisy later stuff as well, but it would be nice to hear Merzbow occasionally drop into this territory again.

I finally got the CD and just finished with the first listen. I'm also really surprised by how musical it is, in Merzbow-terms, of course. It's a great listen, even if I'm not a fan of electric guitar abuse. I like the shiny digipak too, and the picture of, I assume, a teenager Akita is an odd choice but it somehow fits the package. Too bad we don't know what the original cover was like, since the tape is not listed on Discogs and I couldn't find an image on the net. I wonder if there are other unusual early works like this? I can only recall the Aka Meme tape and especially one of two tracks on a compilation. I think the track is called Awa Dance and it's a great ritualistic-sounding track, completely musical with no noise at all. I also wonder how many tapes from the '80s are not listed on Discogs. And, of course, whether we'll see further reissues of tapes! I hope we will! Correction: I just checked and it's not Awa Dance that I meant, but Hannya-Haramitta. Both are very musical, but I definitely prefer the latter over the former. They're on this compilation: www.discogs.com/Various-Paris-Tokyo/release/223684. Both tracks are on Youtube.
