Hi everyone,
Over the past week more or less ive had an interesting conversation with the label Rare Noise Records and Alec Empire in regards to downloads.
In case you havent heard basically what happened is that Rare Noise went to the twittersphere to voice their concern about trollh's blog which had recently posted the new album Cuts by Merzbow, Gustaffson and Pandi released a while back by the label and was put made readily available on the blog for everyone to download for free.
Now, we dont really need to discuss the moral, social, and legal aspects of downloading copyrighted music without proper compensation to the artists. Things should be clear enough to understand that wether you do it or not, downloading those files is illegal. It needs to be said as well that i might be biased because i agree to some extenct with having the ability to download music even if its illegal as it allows me to make more well informed desitions in regards on how to spend my money in music. It is a well known fact that i download all my music and i then erase those albums i dont like and keep those i do like until i can scrape enough money to buy physical copies of those albums. That is how my music collection has expanded over the years and i like my system, but i also know it is not legal to do it that way. Even though i would like to believe everyone is doing the exact same thing as me (that they have the same intention of actually buy music), there sad truth is that this is not always the case. Some people will just download and avoid paying altogether.
Having said all of that, the label (and alec as well) along with several artists directly connected to this forum's topics voiced their concern about this and asked for it to be removed. And although i wished a compromised would be made, we as fans have some obligation to respect the artist wishes in terms of their own creation. At least to some degree.
To this day the forum had a direct link to the blog because of those reasons, but because of what i described before ill remove the link to the blog.
I know this doesnt change much, and probably (most likely) im blowing this out of proportion but is the least we can do here. The blog is stil operational, youll just have to look for it another way i guess.
I hope that by doing this i will not inadvertedly make people leave or give less encouragement for people to join. I know that this will not make me many new friends, but i think its the right thing to do.
