Just curious, but how many of you own Merzbow releases with unique or crazy packaging? (Wooden boxes, box sets etc.) I only own around 20 or so physical releases by Merzbow. None that I own really fit this description aside from Lop-Lop. I would love to have Kibako!

None that I own really fit this description aside from Lop-Lop. I would love to have Kibako! i don't but i'd love to have a massive merzbow collection. the artwork on every release i've seen really appeals to me. in fact, seeing the merzbuddha artwork drew me into merzbow even more than the music at first. something about the pigeon on the buddha head had and has immense appeal to me and i just knew that i would love this artist [and, apparently, his wife/sister's artwork]. merzbow artwork is used very skillfully both from a commercial and artistic point of view. it provides some visual context for the music while offering the potential buyer something worth his or her money.

I own (I Think) about 80 releases altogether now... In terms of crazy lavish packaging I have: -Eucalypse, comes in a wooden box with a swiveling lid, 4 circular postcard things... but it's not that nice, my CD is all bent up where it's near impossible to get out of the box and the lid doesn't really fit properly -Tamago, large white card egg shaped thing, very simple but pretty cool to have, Ive not seen anything like it elsewhere. -Houjoue, Double size DVD case with 6 CDs -LopLop, DVD case with postcard, sticker, metal pendant etc... -13 Birds in a Bag, set of CDs in jewel cases in tote bag + bonus disc... not all that nice to be honest... I like the way the crumpled scrap of paper with metallic paint on it is advertised as 'original masami akita artwork'... -Kibako, cardboard box with lid, weird bag to hold 2CDs, postcard, sticker and wooden flower thing, similar to LopLop, nice to have but I wouldn't recommend paying a lot of money for it. -Batzoutai with material gadgets, I'm not sure which edition it is, There's 3 separate releases of it as far as I am aware, but mine comes in a sturdy plastic 'clam shell' type case... i don't really know what to call it, it's nice though. -Timehunter promo version, card backing with 4 3" CDs pinned to it and a paper press release cover which folds over... very unusual, I don't have the actual one, but that comes in a sort of personal memo type folder... very odd Of course, there are a lot more box sets with crazy packaging, I've always been a little bit reluctant to spend a lot of money on them. Probably half of the Merzbow CDs I own come in what i might call 'unconventional' packaging, mini gatefold sleeves, elabourate digipaks with fold out card panels... of all of those, Marmo, Ouroboros, Dead Zone are fairly unusual and interesting... and the original pressing of Pulse Demon with the shiny headache inducing packaging is very cool

Hmm, off the top of my head:
- Metalvelodrome: nice slipcase and a great and pretty far-out poster. The photos under the CD trays and the plastic CD case are awesome too. Check Discogs if you wanna see them - digipak Pulse Demon: when held/moved at certain angles against light, it's a cool thing to behold - Mercurated: nothing unusual really, but a beautiful digipak with great psychedelic colours - Green Wheels: unusual (a plastic box that is a bit like old VHS cases were) but at the same time a bit ugly too - Hole: I've got the limited to 50 edition which comes in a spray-painted thin paper-wrap; the CD package cover has a small hole in the centre which shows the asscrack of a woman's ass on a card inside the package (there are 3 cards with different female asses on them), then there's also a photo of a naked woman (though you can't see the genitals) in a cowboy dress. There's a menacing-looking gig flyer reproduction too - Another Merzbow Records: nothing unusual, but I love the pictures of toy animals, a toy jazz band and a Buddha-head - Mort Aux Vaches: great foldout cover showing a naked Asian girl who's being orally pleased by a guy, all in psychedelic colours - Merzbow/Smegma collab LP: just a picture LP, but the pictures on both sides are fantastic!
I'd love to see some pretty obscure releases that have highly unusual packaging: Dadarottenvator, Project Frequency, the split 7" with Smell & Quim... Wish I had the money to buy these!

I'd quite like a copy of Green Wheels, just cos its a CD with a 5" vinyl which seems like a very odd way of doing it. I'd forgotten about those last few you mentioned, is it Project Frequency that's all wrapped up in chicken wire? I guess the strangest packaging ever could be the 'Merzcar' if you can call that packaging... "Most infamous was the Merzcar, label owner Anders had a rundown Mercedes-Benz 230 that he rarely drove, the police told him to move it or else it would be towed, so he rigged the CD player to play the label's newest release, Merzbow's Noisembryo, and made it impossible to turn off or remove, he then put the car up for sale as a limited edition of one. It went unsold and eventually broke down, Anders then removed the CD player and got rid of the car"

I'm happy to own Green Wheels (and I paid through the nose for it too), although I think it's not as good as some of his other stuff from that era, like Pulse Demon. And I hope my soon-to-arrive turntable will be able to play the 5"!
Yes, the Project Frequency LP is wrapped in wire. The Dadarottenvator LP comes in a wooden box and on green vinyl, I think. The 7" with Smell & Quim comes with a plastic vagina. Noisembryo also had a version which was a box set (edition of 50) with a shirt and a can (that said "noiserooms" instead of mushrooms or something like that) and perhaps something else too. I wish I could afford even the normal CD edition! It's one of his absolute classics and I've never heard it.

yeah me neither, there's a huge number of those CDs from the 90s that I haven't heard yet, I've only really got the obvious ones, Venereology, Hybrid Noisebloom etc... I'd very much like to get a load of the others. My record player is a little iffy with 5" records... I have about 5 or 6 of them, and whenever i try to put the needle over the starting point, the player thinks it's at the end of a record and brings the arm back to the edge... but It's some budget junk from the 1970's I bought for £1 at a boot sale, so can't really complain...

Would be interesting to see Pornoise 1KGs inserts (which with it weights 1KG). As far I know all remaining weights stand for used porn-magazine parts

'Green Wheels' ... um, 'Timehunter' (I like that one; the personal organiser 4 x mini-CD set), the deluxe 'Kibako' (wooden penknife my arse! It's a bloody corkscrew, innit?), 'Eucalypse' (another wooden box fave), but probably my most fave is the moulded plastic tray edition of the Merz / S & Q '7 Inches Inside Vagina' split single. Easily top of the list, it's so damn crazy. I really like what S & Q used to do packaging-wise. Should I mention an original cassette copy of 'Merz Collection 007', or is that just showing off? ('cos it ain't really 'lavish'. 'Tis Merz's own work though, and I do prize it very highly)

There are turntables like that that will only play the standard formats. In case you want to upgrade to a new one, apparently Rega sell good quality entry-level high end turntables at an affordable price. Don't know though if they play 5" records. Important Records sell them and I think they even throw in 2 records if you order (or at least they did a couple years ago).
You actually have that? How's the music? It's one channel for each artist, right? I envy you also for having an original 80s tape. I know he released shitloads of them back then and I'd really like to see a nice collection of them. I guess some were packaged unusually (I think Kibbutz was packaged in a bloody cloth or something).

Id definitely try and upgrade at some point so Il keep an eye on those. At the moment I'm living out of a 9 foot square room in my parent's house so there's an extreme lack of space with all the junk Ive collected already

I can't think of how many releases I own, it's probably about 15. As far as cool releases go, I have Eucalypse, the 2cd version of Lop Lop, and the limited box of Camouflage, which is filled with dried lillypads. Oh, and I have 24 Hours - A Day of Seals now, but the packaging on that one isn't too special, it's just a box.

i'll start with the big one, merzbox, Batztoutai With Material Gadgets in big plastic case, this release is what caught my eye, made me first aware of merzbow, what the heck is this big bulky ugly looking thing jammed in amongst all the regular cd's in record store, it was so obscure to me at time so i bought it, hated it but strangely wanted more Metalvelodrome, never got the slip card, green wheels, more ugliness split with slugbait Arctic Twilight / Anthem Of The Sun, cool metal tin, but crap release from memory pulse demon Magnesia Nova, but crap release from memory Scumtron, std jewel case no spine or back insert just a pink cover i find minimal obscure Mort Aux Vaches: Locomotive Breath, but another crap release from memory Frog, coloured vinyl, bonus found it in a bargin clearance bin 24 Hours - A Day Of Seals, its kinda simple with the inner card sleeves for cd's but this is one of my favorites releases Ikebukuro Dada another fav Last Of Analog Sessions Tamago ýHoujoue Sha Mo 3000 ý Mini + Box, this one is pretty cool Turmeric artist addition, a lot of effort into this packaging but unfortunately i'm not a fan of this release Eucalypse The Celebration Of The Lizard / March Of The Myriapoda, cool picture disc Camouflage ltd box Ouroboros 13 Japanese Birds lot Graft with 7inch Merzmorphosis Merzphysics ýTimehunter promo version mini cycle ý and latest edition that arrived yesterday, Duo artist edition, like the packaging with this one, just finished listening to bonus disc recorded in 1979! ý
and on top of "would be nice to have but do i really need more merzbow" list
Antimonument picture disc Metamorphism in marble case, Lowest Music & Arts 1980 - 1983 merzbient vinyl set

Mannn, the Metamorphism marble case would be super cool. I would also really like Pornoise, not only because it is a cool boxset of tapes, but also because it's pretty much my favorite of his 80s works.
