Its been a crazy ride so far this year. We have seen so many releases this year that i hardly mannage to remember all of them but it caught my attention when i saw the massive ammount of Boxsets released this year, its almost insane to see so many albums, it makes my mouth water with exitement. But if you pay close attention to the ammount he has released we have 41 CDs, 18 LPs, and a 7" throughout 5 boxsets. Thats 60 albums (well, 48 if you take out the 12 from the original Merzbient) and i remembered an interview Merzbow did a while ago (i think it was back on the days when Merzbient was just released or something), when he said that he had anough material stored for another Merzbox if he wanted to release another one. That got me thinking that maybe thats exactly what he did throughout this year, if you think about it its 50 new releases cleverly distributed on smaller packages so that they would sell better than the original Merzbox. If you look on the extreme records page, the set is still on sale. What do you guys think

hehe...good theory...I was thinking something similar, I mean, Merzbient, Merzphysics, Merzmorphosis, Duo and Lowest Form of Music & Arts are all from the same period (80s through mid 90s) that the Merzbox material is from, so that could quite easily have been another 50 disc set right there!
Maybe another thing is that people will hesitate to drop $500* all at once on one item like the Merzbox, especially in the economic situation at the moment... psychologically, it seems easier to spend $100 on five occasions rather than $500 all at once. And also then, you can do like they did with Merzbient, take those 10 CDs and put them on vinyl, I wouldn't be surprised if Merzphysics and Merzmorphosis get the same treatment. That way uber collectors are going to buy it twice, and there's enough for people who prefer vinyl or prefer CD (personally I just stick with the CDs) therefore, the label makes double the money.... Now imagine if the Merzbox was put out on vinyl, it might have spanned about 85 LPs...! And certainly, few people would be able to afford to buy it.
*hah...having said that, I seem to remember that when I bought the Merzbox way back when, I paid in 3 separate installments...Merzfinance if you will...didn't cost extra to do that though

That set was particularly well recieved by critics and copies sold out quite fast. There was a demand for the set (i know, i missed my chance of having the CDs) and thats why it get the reissue treatment. The price though is extremly steep, in fact, i think the Merzbox is cheaper than the test pressings from Merzbient.

Heh, I still toy with the idea of getting a Merzbox. It's just that it would cost me as much as a month of rent, as much as three months of food, as much as a nice new drum kit...there are all sorts of things I could do with 500 dollars, and the Merzbox just isn't something I've felt the gumption to shell out money for yet.
Maybe if it's still on sale when I become more financially well-off I'll do it. Right now I'm working on my last year of college, and I only work 10-15 hours a week. It could still happen!
And, hah, yeah, there's been at least a Merzbox's worth of unheard Merzbow material released this year, and mostly in big boxsets. I'd wager he still has enough stuff cataloged away that he could do another Merzbox's worth of material still.
As neat as the retrospective sets are, though, I'd prefer it if he did more new material instead. I think the direction he's going in has a lot of potential, I'm just waiting for that new Merzbow album that makes me feel like I do when I listen to 1930, Aqua Necromancer, or 24 Hours - A Day of Seals. Lop Lop was pretty good, possibly in my top 25 of his, but nothing of his has really struck me in a while like some of my favorites by him have.

From the sample from Kibako, it seems that that album is going to kick some serious ass.
