Yet another box set is coming up soon. I just saw the info posted on wikipedia (thanks to the user who posted it). Now its time to spread the word. Merzmorphosis This is another 10CD box set by the same label who released "Merzphysics" a couple of months back. Actually, this is a sequel to said boxset. Merzmorphosis is focusing yet again on archival recordings and this time arround it will also include outtakes from albums "Green Wheels", "Space Metalizer", and the fan (and critical) favorite "Pulse Demon". The set focuses on the period between 1995 and 1997 after the invention of synths. According to the site that sells it, the set has a "electro-psychedelic noise" focus and its has some ressonance with techno music. Here is the only information available so far (its in japanese) diskunion.net/rock/ct/detail/AGY120627-MZ-01Ill continue to camp on Youth Inc's site until they release some info ;D

On a weird afterthought.
If its called Merzmorphosis, why isnt it showing a butterfly or some insect you know. Something that has gone through the metamorphosis phase

An emu is the perfect choice for the cover of Merzmorphosis as they go through a worm-like larval stage for a few months after hatching. They then create a cocoon made from a mixture of their saliva and a sticky substance they excrete from a gland located in a pouch at their rump. They can be in the cocoon for months while their bodies change and they wait for summer rains to arrive at their hatching grounds. When they do hatch, they emerge completely transformed into a massive flightless bird which rampages through regional areas of mainland Australia - knocking down houses and feeding on small children. A fearsome and wondrous beast.
There was also an emu featured on the cover of of 'Electro Magnetic Unit' (check the initials of the words in the album title) and so Masami does have form in featuring the bird.

Oooh, if this has a similar feel to the Merz- series releases, I may very well enjoy it a lot.

Got this box a few weeks ago, have listened to the first 2 CDs so far. Just like with Merzphysics, the quality is pretty consistent - no standouts like Pulse Demon but even when the material was probably never intended for proper release, it's still good. The biggest difference on the first 2 discs compared to Merzphysics is the use of EMS (usually in full speed mode). Looking forward to listening to the rest of the set. And wondering if there are any more boxes like this lurking around the corner...

recently got this thing in the mail, but it seems to intimidating to listen to just yet...you know when you want to just wait until you find an entire day free so you can listen to the 10 discs at once? Even though, it's not supposed to be listened to that way perhaps [unlike a bona-fide quadruple album such as 24 Hours..]

Heh, I'd listen to it bit by bit personally. That's how I've approached his longer works like this in the past.

I've been listening to Merzphysics and Merzmorphosis the last couple days on my computer and crappy computer speakers at work. I really enjoy most of the CDs. It's surprising how 20 CDs of "noise jams" are pretty satisfying. Merzphysics is more monotonous while Merzmorphosis is more experimental, not the least because it features the EMS synth. I'm now listening to the last CD of 'Morphosis and the last couple discs have parts from the Space Metalizer CD. I just love the sounds that I consider the essence of that awesome CD: the warm and sometimes soft EMS sounds and the harsher metallic sounds SM starts with. Interestingly, I haven't been able to recognize the Pulse Demon materials. None of it sounds like PD to me. There's a CD with tracks called "Variation for P.D." which I assumed would be for Pulse Demon, but the sound is different. Maybe it's just a matter of mixing? PD has a distinctive sound (I don't know any other Merzbow album with that sharp, high-pitched piercing sound) and maybe it's just due to the way it was mixed. I don't know Green Wheels enough to be able to recognize anything from it. Of course, not every piece and disc is very good but the good ones outnumber the not so good ones. I also realize I'm listening to these box sets as background music (in crap quality) as I'm at work, but I'm pretty sure I'd have the same opinion if I were listening to them at home on my hifi. Anyone else gone through these box sets? If so, what do you think about them?

I will make an effort to find time to revisit these sets. I got through the first 9 of Merzphysics and only the first 5 of Merzmorphosis due to life taking over. I used to really make the effort of sitting down and listening to box sets throughout, but with this one I'm happy to have some older material that I know I haven't heard yet that I can tuck into at some point.

PS. I particularly enjoyed discs 2 and 3 of Merzmorphosis when I started going through that set. I took those CDs to the snow last year and enjoyed skiing and whiteouts even more with them Speaking of box sets, I got away for the weekend recently and had Day of Seals as my road music - all except disc 2 which I forgot at home, that having been my favourite disc there and ending up mixed up in a different CD case. Not a bad set for a long drive with some of its wider spans of time/loopings. Still, Houjoue is the box set for me - a crowning achievement of the laptop years before the focus shifted elsewhere.
