So an unusual new album has appeared courtesy of Old Captain records Ukraine. Following the theme of other recent announcements it's a 'lost tape' but this time recorded at some point in the 90s. To be released on CD in April. One 40 minute long mix, lots of samples available on the bandcamp page, seems to be quite beat driven. Looking forward to this one. oldcaptain.bandcamp.com/album/merzbow-exoking

I'm listening to the samples right now, and I'm scratching my head thinking, is this even Merzbow? "Bizarre" is the right word indeed... There's nothing even remotely similar to this in Merzbow's entire '90s period...
I need a couple more listens, but I'll almost certainly end up ordering the CD.

Only just having a priper liaten to the samples myself, on headphones rather than phone speakers. Yeah, it really is uncharacteristic, but it sounds terrific in my opinion, very promising. It doesn't sound 90s at all... some of the textures remind me more of albums like 'Scene' from the mid 2000s, as far as composition and the sampling are concerned though, I cant really think of an album that's delved into this style in as much detail. The dancy beat on clip #4 was especially surprising. I'm eager to hear the full track.

To be honest, I’m concerned about the dance music samples, but I’ll have to hear the full album to form an opinion.

I love the official description from the site, calling this an 'allegedly' lost tape! It certainly is different - would love to know the real story behind it.

Ha I thought that was odd too. Its the word newsreaders use when they haven't got an actual news story but still have an agenda... "a politician ALLEGEDLY said something we think they shouldn't have..." etc. But yeah, would be interesting to know more about it. I guess Akita's rediscovering a lot of old tapes as of late, there must be hundreds of them... Anyone hazard a guess at what it is on the cover? I've drawn a blank.

It does sound like Apple Rock though. If it is indeed an authentic Merzbow (mini) album, I will definitely buy it - I loved Apple Rock.

“Apple Rock” has dance music rhythms? I don’t remember it at all... Must listen to it again when I can.

Yeah, you're probably right. Seems like the actual Download which you can obtain as soon as payment is through, contains only samples. Very good ones, btw. :-)

Wow, sounds like we're in for a never before seen face of Merzbow again. This use of electronic dance beats sounds like something by Aphex Twin that's been to hell and back. Some snippets have a certain kind of squiggly and moist quality to them that really reminds me of A Taste Of - which was a great album - so I'll say I'm hyped for this one.

My favorite track is mix 5 where they have that 40s style Tom and Jerry music.

Got the CD in the post today. It's an absolutely barking mad 40 minutes or so. I don't think there's a lot else I can say that wasn't already given away by the album teasers, really wild and uncharacteristic use of drum machines, loops and samples with a few familiar sounds thrown in there. I'd love to know more about where the samples came from, as mentioned above - parts remind me of Tom and Jerry or early Disney films, there's a really quirky keyboard part that reminds me of an old Streets Of Rage style arcade game and the last minute or so is especially cool with a distant sounding hardcore punk racket that fades in and out. Hearing this album was kind of a shock at first but I have to say I'm warming to it pretty quickly.

I took a listen to this recently. It has a track from Apple Rock somewhere in the middle, which leads me to believe that this is indeed an outtake from Apple Rock sessions. Overall, great recording, just wish it was longer.

I finally listened to Exoking. There’s not much to add to what’s already been written above. I can’t compare it to any other Merzbow (although it appears Apple Rock is from the same session; I just don’t remember Apple Rock). It’s full of unusual samples, some even techno- or dance music-like. The whole album (which is just one track) has a sketch-like feel to it — not that that’s a bad thing. It’s certainly an anomaly in the Merzbow discography and quite an enjoyable album.
