So this album was announced a long while ago, last year I think... but it finally has a release date of September 18th They're also releasing it 'properly' in that it's multi format, Vinyl and CD editions, plus downloads. I'm unsure just how much of merzbow's stuff will be at the forefront of this, but it does sound like an interesting record nonetheless. Could be a good listen. li316-50.members.linode.com/products/flying-basket

Got a copy of this one not really knowing what to expect, but just thought I'd share a few first impressions now that I've had a first listen through. It's an incredibly accomplished hour or so of music, lot's of different dynamics, everything from minimal tones and NWW-eque soundscaping (kind of) to full blown jazz insanity. The saxophone is, I guess, what you might expect to hear in a usual jazz record, but the rest of the performance makes the whole thing sound a little more fresh. There are moments where it's swapped for a clarinet which is nice. Merzbow's performance starts in a similar fashion to what he did with the Scott Miller/Lee Camfield collaboration a few years back, kind of jittery, but there's a fair amount of variation throughout, lots of rustling, hissing, layers that bring things to life a little. There are moments where a synthesizer bursts out almost sounding like an old arcade machine and the usual Merzbow white noise appears towards the end, ramping up the intensity along with the other players. Jim O'Rourke is one of those artists I've never quite got into... but there are several moments where his guitar playing is the star of the show, and for me he's responsible for some of the most sonically interesting moments on here. An unusual guitar style of course, imagine if John Zorn's saxophone style was translated to guitar... there's a point where he plays a continual sludgy riff while the other players improvised that I was really digging a lot. So yeah, first impressions and all, but I'm pretty impressed with this. Lot's of cool things happening, changes of pace, rarely a dull moment to be honest.
