I recently started to really appreciate the Batztoutai with Material Gadgets double CD (I mean disc 1, because the second CD hasn’t really grown on me). I think the first 4 tracks are fantastic, but the whole CD is really good. So when I read that the original double vinyl version from 1986, titled Batztoutai with Memorial Gadgets, is a different mix, I started looking for it. Recently I managed to buy it on Ebay, and after having listened to it twice, it’s indeed quite different from the CD: the sequence of the tracks is different and there are sections on both versions that are missing from the other version.
Apparently the original vinyl album was a remix by Ron Lessard (aka Emil Beaulieu) of RRRecords of the material Akita sent him; the cover says “song selection – Ron.” The CD version is a “re-create version” of the original double LP, done in 1993 by Akita. The liner notes by Akita to the Age of 369/Chant 2 double CD includes this: “I continued to work on collage noise music. Those works appeared on our second album "Batztoutai with Memorial Gadgets" (RRR). The original tape of the double album Included more works like "Age of 369" and "Chant 2". Unfortunately, the album was remixed by RRR without these harsh recordings but now it's re-released as a double CD (RRR) and you can find them.”
So this is an interesting case of there being two quite different versions of one album. While the overall feel of the two versions is the same, I like the CD version perhaps a bit more; nevertheless, I’m happy to own the vinyl version as well and will keep listening to it.
Here’s the song Battotai (written by a European, interestingly) that was sampled on the album: www.youtube.com/watch?v=yhFmk4kEKbM
As a side note to the topic of different versions of the same album, I still don’t know how different the recent 2LP reissue of Antimonument is from the (bootleg) CD version (which I own). I asked Menstrual Recordings but they didn’t give a direct answer. It was remastered in 2014 by Akita and I suppose this means just minor differences. I'm also curious about the difference between the vinyl and CD versions of Ecobondage (of which I have the CD version which is apparently a remix of the LP). Of course, I could just buy the vinyl versions to compare them, but I’m not rich enough to risk spending a lot of money only to find there’s basically no difference .
