There is a new Merzbow/John Duncan album which is called "The Black Album". merzbow.net/blog/the-black-album/Every cover was shot with a shotgun! Crazy! I like this idea and the cover looks still very cool.

I personally don't like the shotgun idea. I hope my usual distributor will have copies for a reasonable price, otherwise I'll have to miss out on this one -- $45 is way too expensive.

I got this record the other day and just finished playing it for the first time. Well, it's a bit of a disappointment, although by no means bad. I'm not sure about who did what as there's no clear information, but I assume side A is Duncan and side B is Akita since it's noisier than side A. They use sound material recorded by Duncan in a nuclear laboratory. It has to be said this is not a noise record, which might be a reason Akita used his name instead of Merzbow. It's more of a "microsound" kind of album, with some electroacoustic music influence. It's hard to describe, but if you're looking for brutal feedback or distortion, there isn't any. It's a pleasant album with a lot of small sounds happening, but it's also kinda without surprises -- at least that's my impression after the first listen. I wish the shotgun-blasted cover was the more limited version instead of the non-blasted one... I personally think it's a stupid idea and I fail to see how it relates to the music. The main reason I don't like it, now that I have the record, is that the cover is a mess with all the paper debris in it, and unless you throw out the cover, you can't get rid of all the paper. I've put the record in a separate sleeve to the one provided (since that's also got paper inside), but some paper will surely find its way into it. At least the record's pressing quality is very good, but if you get the album, be sure to properly clean it with a brush before playing it!
I'm not familiar with John Duncan except for a CD with Andrew McKenzie (aka The Hafler Trio) and a few LPs. I think I'm gonna play them next.

Thanks for your impressions about the album. The blasted cover seems to be very unpractical indeed, I didn't thought that it would affect the record itself. But one advantage does the sleeve has: When you want to sell the album, it doesnt matter if you declare it with a M or F grade
