These 2 box sets are on sale: www.indiemerch.com/merzbow/category/83I think I bought them from the Merzbow website for about twice the price (although that included postage) so it might be worth buying them here.

Saw this a couple of days ago, I now have a copy of Merzmorphosis on the way I paid a fair bit more for Merzphysics too, these are the sorts of things though that I doubt will ever show up for a reasonable price from now on. I once had a chance to buy Merzbient for £40, now kicking myself that I didn't go for it cos you'd be very lucky to find it for under 3 times that price now.

I just ordered both of them, quite pricey but I can justify it by the fact that it is slightly more then half the normal cost after shipping from Japan, I never bought anything by Merzbow new before so he gets some money off this purchase, and it would almost double the amount of Merzbow cds in my collection. I found some streaming sites to listen to them before purchase as it was quite a bit to spend without hearing them beforehand. I can post them if anyone wants to hear them before dropping money on it. Not to mention its almost 20 hours of prime era Merzbow which sold me on it. There is only one copy of Merzmorphosis left now.

I've still only heard parts of both boxes but it's surprising how good they are despite only being "jams": you can hear they were not meant to be albums on their own, only raw materials, but they're good nevertheless!

Got Merzmorphosis today. So far I'm enjoying it a lot more than Merzphysics, although my ears are killing me. The introduction of synthesizers gives a lot of variation in the sound. I'm surprised by (what I think are) vocal parts in the first track, sort of painful and distorted howling, I've heard similar parts in Green Wheels which was recorded at the same time. I'm familiar with a lot of other noise artists who use vocals consistently in their work, I can't imagine Akita writhing about on the floor shrieking into microphones like those guys... but in general vocals have hardly played a role at all in his work, does anyone know any more examples of it? aside from the obvious samples of porn films etc in his earlier work. I never found the 'singing' that was supposed to be in LopLop, one part in the second track sounded like a robotic om chant, but I'm not convinced that's what everyone was talking about.
PS. Merry Christmas for tomorrow!

I haven't noticed the vocals either on disc 1 of Merzmorphosis or on Green Wheels. I think the notes on Noisembryo also mention vocals but I didn't hear them either... I really like the manipulated laughter on the last track of Venereology although it's most likely not Akita's voice. I know Bara used to do death metal-style vocals (it works really well on Venereology but I think it's somewhat less successful on Flare Gun) but I've never heard Akita's vocals.

It's been a long while since I've listened to Venerology actually, had forgotten about that last track. It's a stand out track for sure, I like the laughter a lot too. I'm yet to hear Noisembryo, I know it's near impossible to track down, but I might give it a listen online at some point. The 'vocals' on Green Wheels happen briefly at the very beginning of the first and second tracks, and especially around the 3:10 mark on the second track. It could be likely that I have completely the wrong end of the stick, I know very little about how this music is made. Those parts are still very few and far between on the album, but they just stick out for how organic they sound to me. Edit: I've just checked the booklet for Green Wheels and it says 'Masami Akita - Voice' in the credits This is what made me think they might be vocals in the first place, I wondered whether there was something similar going on. If you skip to the 4 minute mark where he brings the lights up to his face. www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-8yWqI1hjYThat's a really cool performance actually, i love it.

I can't check Green Wheels now but will do so when I have the chance. If I didn't see Kylie Minoise using his vocals to make that sound, I wouldn't guess it was vocals. Which I guess goes to show that any sound source can be made to sound completely different from how it originally sounded.
