Hospital Hill have 2 Merzbow live albums on the way next month... -'Kookaburra' -'Cats Squirrel' collaboration with Oren Ambarchi The Hospital Hill Facebook page gives a few clues about the albums... Both seem to have been recorded while Merzbow was in Australia last year... Kookaburra is likely to be Merzbow's set from the Riverside Theatre Merzbow and Oren Ambarchi collaborated at the Campbelltown Arts Centre. There are some great pictures from both events, apparently the Riverside Theatre photos are actually video stills which is kinda exciting... as far as I can make out the video hasn't surfaced online yet, would be very cool indeed to see a live video coupled with the release of the album. I know Bucketfel has had some correspondence from the label on his Merzbow News page, but I thought I'd try and start some discussion on here as well hope you don't mind

That's right, Kookaburra was recorded during Masami's solo set at Riverside and the collab was from the Campbelltown show. Excellent quality video footage exists and is not yet online. Apparently there are still decisions being made re: exactly how to include it. Considering there is not much great quality live footage, it would be great to have a whole concert in video would it not?

I've not been all that impressed with live footage on YouTube until I saw that recent video on merzbows blog which I thought was fantastic. So given the right sort of treatment, I think a concert film could really work.

I was at the Riverside Theatre gig and wasn't too crazy about it. It will be interesting to hear it on CD though. I was meant to go to the collab gig with Oren Ambarchi and I managed to miss it. I'm still kicking myself for it.

ah wow, I guess that's one good thing about going to a Merzbow gig though, there's every chance it might end up on a CD =p

I'm still kicking myself for it. Ah you were there too I enjoyed the set, it did have quite a slow drift but that made the experience grow in a fascinating, hypnotic way and he really seemed to channel that quality, particularly in terms of when certain sounds/instruments came in. My one complaint was that it simply wasn't loud enough! PARTICULARLY in comparison to when Merzbow played previously in Sydney in 2004, which was stupidly/terrifyingly loud and cleared like 90% of the audience during the set. Luckily the Kookaburra CD will enable one to turn it up as loud as one wants The Oren/Merzbow performance sounded much better and was really an excellent set.

The Merzbow/Oren Ambarchi release 'Cat's Squirrel' has begun to pop up all over the net, loads of different sellers stocking the LP, doesn't seem to be any word on a CD release just yet though... It seems Boomkat already has the LP available to buy with the download available in the next few days... There are previews of it on there for anyone whos interested in giving it a listen. boomkat.com/vinyl/660522-merzbow-oren-ambarchi-cat-s-squirrel

Hospital Hill: "If you were buying a CD (hopefully people still do that!) and there was the possibility of extra video content, would you prefer:
a) DVD or Blue Ray b) Digital Download"
I don't wanna jump to conclusions, but to me that sounds like they're gonna be releasing the Kookaburra video footage along with the CD. I usually hate bonus DVDs, genuinely... they're almost always full of nonsense that as a fan of the band i'd rather not see... but in this case, it would be excellent to see some Merzbow footage cos for many Merzbow outside of his album's is somewhat of a mystery. They'd be the first to offer something like this.

i think a DVD is always fun. A digital Download of what you just bought is basically asking for nothing else to be included.

Anybody got the URL for the Hospital Hill Facebook page? Looked for it in vain on FB itself. Plus the 'Cat's Squirrel' release appears on Black Truffle, not Hospital Hill - is there an affiliation between the two labels?

I asked Hospital Hill about the live albums once again... "Yes. Available thru our online store before Dec. Sorry it's taken us so long! Very excited to get it out."

Perhaps you could email them if they actually have it in stock? Apparently a record store in Sydney is selling these 2 CDs, at least their website says so. Too bad they're AUD 30 each. I'll wait to see how much the label will be selling them for. I find it strange a record shop is already selling them yet you can't order them from the label's webshop...

Well, I can confirm these 2 releases are out: I saw them at a record shop the other day. The seem to be in DVD cases or at least something similar (couldn't check as they were in a glass drawer). They still can't be ordered from the label's online store though. How odd...

its a weird one, I questioned the label about them again the other day. Apparently a very small amount have been sent to their Australian distributors, but nothing internationally, meaning none of the sellers on Amazon and Ebay actually have them in stock. Upon asking them when they'd be available from their own site I was told that they were awaiting approval from Masami regarding some videos (?) and that they were ready to go otherwise.

Today I have received the Kookaburra album! I bought it on 27th november from an seller at amazon. The location from this seller is in germany. This must mean, that there are already copies around the world. Unfortunately there is no video material in this release, it is just an simple audio CD in a DVD case. The case itself is more like a digipak, it is made of cardboard. That evening, I will listen to it and see how the content is.

wow really? do you know which seller in particular you bought it from? There's a list of about 7 on amazon, I'd be inclined to say that the ones with millions of ratings might be a pain in the arse, I've had problems with them before and they have no way of telling me if they have it in stock since they dispatch from loads of different warehouses across the world.

Yes, it was "zoreno-deutschland". But when I look on the UK amazon, there is also a seller who is called "zoreno-uk". I think this is the same company. It seems to be, that they have for each country a seperate seller account.

cool, thanks. I think I might give it a shot. They also have the CD edition of Cat's Squirrel. Hospital Hill haven't been in any sort of hurry with their shopfront... I'm still a little confused about what confirmation they need from Masami though.

When I ordered the album, I also wasn't sure if they really have it in stock. It was more a trial-and-error method and I was quite surprised that my copy has arrived so fast. I am not sure what about Akita's confirmation is. This seems a bit chaotic for me To lose some words about the album: I had time to listen to the whole album and I am satisfied with it. The music is varied, there are no dominating repetetive elements. It is one big track, this is the only minus for me. I would prefer it, if the whole piece would be divided in at least two tracks, which are connected with a gapless function. But that is not really necessary. I like the design of the packaging. It is quite untypical for a Merzbow release, it is very clean and organized. In the innerside of the sleeve is also a text which was written by Alex Pozniak (but I don't know who this guy is). The audio quality is excellent! The only moment where you can feel that this is a live recording, is the applause by the audience in the end of the album. It is sad, that there isn't any video material. Not even on the audio CD. I am pretty sure, that this release was initally thought as a video release.

I'm looking forward to hearing it! Can't think of a Merzbow Live album that isn't one long track now that I think about it... apart from 'Great American Nude' because it's cuts from loads of different gigs. I suppose that's true to how his shows are though, just one continuous set. There was a lot of talk about video. The set was definitely filmed in high quality, but I don't think there was ever an official word about what would eventually happen to that footage. I don't really want to jump to more conclusions, no doubt it'll appear at some point

This might be the reason. I have only one live-album, it is "artificial invagination" which is only 20 minutes long. It isn't right to tear apart one coherent unit, but the idea has more to do with my personal listening habit. I just need some breaks when I am listening to music. I need a few minutes between every track, so my head can "grab some air" or I have the chance to go to the toilet. It is like reading a whole book at once, instead of reading single chapters.

I'll probably order these CDs once they're available from the label (I'm hoping I'll be able to save on shipping since they're based in Sydney like me). I'm looking forward to hearing how Kookaburra will sound like after having been present at the concert. I'm not sure how exciting the live video would be as there was basically no movement by Akita on stage. Of course, as a bonus it would've been nice. By the way, Artificial Invagination is a studio recording that only uses live recordings as sound material.

Yep, it looks like the wait is over. You can now buy both direct from the HH website: store.hospitalhill.com.au/collections/all Apparently videos from the performances will be available on Vimeo very soon for viewing. Finally, more Merzbow music being released in an otherwise dry year. Here's to hoping that there are enough (standard) new album releases on the cards for 2014 to make up for it. (There was talk of a 3 CD New Zealand birds tribute, goodness knows what's happening with that one...)
