ooh, hadn't noticed those other two Slowdown Albums. Definitely cool to hear some more of this old archival stuff, I'm not entirely sure if they remain completely unreleased, or if they've appeared somewhere before. There's a Hyper Music Vol.2 in the lowest music and arts box set. November 1979 must surely be one of the very first things put to tape under the Merzbow name. If that's the case I'd be very interested in hearing it. I've not heard any of the remix albums so far, other than a short clip which was surprisingly good actually, those Slowdown releases aren't the easiest to get hold of.

I just have the first 3rensa.... 3RENSA FB04 will be released in the end of march (Monthly sort of FB02-january, FB03-february, FB04-march... may so on? Hyper music was simply boring for me, possibly i wasnt in the mood. 23-11-1979 will be interesting, but i think, a must-have.

23 November 1979 is the bonus CD in Duo limited edition box set. Cool reissue. I do like the Hyper Music Vol. 2 in the Lowest Music And Arts box set. I look forward to this one as it seems to be unreleased yet.

Nowadays, as im working as a sound enginner, and there are some many heavy snowings, im happy I use noise to fight with the weather, so a silence can be a good friend at 5am when the family sleeps, and dont creep me to death cause i use headphones.... so now Im relaxing for Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement – Papua Land: Where Spirits Still Rule (Prurient's Dominick ambient noise project)

Slowdown have updated their website with more details about those two archive releases. It seems that these are the first two in a series of six albums they intend to release, all material recorded 79-81. There are also a couple of audio samples for each album (you guys may already be one step ahead of me with this) they sound absolutely mad, especially hyper music which has a buzzy synth "wob wob wob wob" which sounds like some early power electronics until an uncharacteristically prog rock sounding organ part and a continuous beat comes in. November 1979 is the other half of the original C90 tape (only side A was included as the bonus disc on DUO)

Even more early recordings are seeing the light of day. Menstrual recordings are continuing their Merzbow reissues with 'Fuckexercise #2'. From what i can gather, this one had no official release but was just shared among friends via cassette trading. Arguably much of the early merzbow catalogue didn't have an 'official' release as they were part of that mail art movement. i wonder how many more of these cassettes were personally distributed by akita that have not been recognised years later. I've speculated before that 'blues maggots' was a similar thing.

Hoping the first 'Fuckexercise' gets a CD re-issue as well. It's only currently partially available on that 'Lowest Music' 10 LP boxset, right? Or is it available somewhere else?
Good news about the Slowdown stuff, though I wish it was easier to get hold of their releases in the UK.

I'll order it soon, along with one of the Produktion CDs released by the same label at the same time. Based on the samples from the Produktion CDs, I have my doubts, but I have a soft spot for early 80s obscure acts, so I'll try my luck with one of these CDs (would do the same with the new Murder Corporation CD, but my budget is tight).

Even more archival releases have appeared courtesy of Slowdown Records. POR#1&2, Volumes 1 and 2. Recorded in 1980, but (i think) previously unreleased. Official release date is in May, but it seems all four of those upcoming albums are already available from Soleilmoon. I have every finger crossed that more distributors pick up on this stuff, having something like Cold Spring on board would be ideal.
I got a copy of Fuckexercize#2 from Menstrual. It's a long old album, more than an hour in length, very lo-fi featuring A LOT of percussive sounds, buzzing and guitar noise. Parts of it are bizarre and cartoonish, some of it comes across as sort of modern classical piece or musique concrete. Sounds change abruptly mid track. I'm running out of ways to talk about Merzbow, for the most part a lot of these early recordings sound like everything thrown into one cooking pot... interesting to hear nonetheless. Are any of you folks familiar with Jandek? For some reason I'm getting that sort of a vibe from this one, but even i'm doubting myself when I say that, I think it's the hacking at guitar strings thing.

I'll have to get those 4 CDs on Slowdown Records eventually. It'd be really good indeed if there was European distribution for them.
I only know Jandek by name, but will have to listen to some of his stuff now.

Amen to the 'European distribution' comment - it's nice to see all this early stuff coming out, but having to import it from Japan makes the price a real pain in the backside.

Hey soleil. Listened to the albums on SoundCloud. Great remastered sound especially from raw Merzbow tapes. Keep those releases coming. I love archival stuff.

Seems that the ever busy Slowdown records are set to release the complete 3RENSA thing as a 6CD box set, that could be rather nice. A new post I just noticed on instagram also points towards the possibility of a remaster and vinyl reissue of Switching Rhetorics - the Merzbow/Shora split album. Shora do quite a worthwhile grindcore/insane shouty racket if that's your thing.

Re-releasing 'Switching Rhetorics' again seems a slightly strange choice. They already re-issued the entirity of Merzbow's half of the album on 'Another Merzbow Records' set, so it's not exactly hard to find.

Does anyone know more about Fuckexercise#2? I was going to add it on to the 2018 albums on wikipedia thinking it was a new release of an unreleased recording, but discogs has it listed as a reissue of the original Fuckexercise tape - which i suspect could be true.

Going by the notes on the CD, and the fact there's no previous release titled "Fuckexercise #2" on Discogs, it would seem this CD is re-release of the "Fuckexercise" tape, as listed on Discogs.

Yeah, it would seem so. Maybe I had the wrong end of the stick thinking it was an unreleased sequel of sorts... (hence the #2) I don't really understand the '#2' since it's a straight up reissue. I did always wonder what Fuckexercise sounded like considering it's the first album listed on wiki... so now I know!

I know where I can find a cassette rip of the release. I don't think its the reissue though since its an old download.

With all the archival tapes being released, here's hoping that more of 80s material will be coming out. I think it would be a great idea to issue all the "Life Performances" with NORD, maybe as a boxset. (I think there was 5 of them?). There is also "Secrets with Merzbow", which I speculate would sound similar to Merzbow's performances with KK NULL as Tibeta Ubik and releases like KIBBUTZ, which featured more or less deconstructed Rock music. Lastly, there are two releases that are a part of "Alternation for rock structures" - DADAVIDA and LIVE DRUM ENSEMBLE. Being a fan of 80s Merzbow, these two recordings are a kind of Holy Grail.

I'm almost certain this is just the beginning of a larger run of archival releases. I read somewhere that Slowdown intend to do a series of six, so there's at least two more to come from them. I'd love there to be a Merzbow/Null box set, all nicely printed up and packaged like Duo or Merzbient, that's very much on my wish list. I think it could be an exciting time for new material too, 2017 took some pretty big risks and had a lot of interesting sonic twists and turns, we haven't had an announcement of a 'new' album so far this year (although there's still been like ten Merzbow albums to speak of so who am I to complain)

Don't think I've seen those titles anywhere yet! "Telecom Live" - probably something related to Collection set? I'm so excited!

From an interview done in February 2018 that I'll post in the interview section:
"A new work that hasn’t been released yet is a Split Double CD with Poland’s Opening Orchestra called “Merzopo” which contains pieces recorded in the autumn of 2016. Other plans for 2018 include reissuing some older works and releases of reworked archive pieces. The latter is going to be released by Slowdown Records, a Japanese record label and it will include 12 CDs with works dating from 1979 till 1985. Collaboration-wise, I have recently worked with Arcane Device and HEXA and those records will be released one of these days. There is also going to be a new Cut album, in collaboration with Balázs Pándi, Mats Gustafsson and Thurston Moore."
