SHIPPING 10th NOVEMBER: MERZBOW 'Nezumimochi' Picture Disc LP & CDCold Spring are very proud to announce our 200th release - the brand new studio album from the King of Japanoise - MERZBOW. The album comes on a stunning picture disc vinyl and CD pack (not available separately). However, both formats contain exclusive and completely different tracks; the CD isn't simply a copy of the vinyl. Over 90 minutes of crunchy, intense noise, complex structures, and hypnotic samples, all with that special Merzbow touch. Recorded this summer, the album is limited to 500 copies. Tracks: LP: A1. Rat (18:08), B1. Rice Cake (17:55) CD: 1. Tamatsubaki (12:41), 2. Joteishi (16:27), 3. Matebashii (25:59) PRE-ORDER HERESAMPLES HERE

I listened to the two samples but can't say I liked them too much... They're rather one-dimensional. There's a simple loop underneath, one layer of noise on top, and that's about it for 10+ minutes (save for a few parts which I think feature EMS). What do others think?

To be honest, I didn't listen to the samples before I had bought the album. I never listen to full tracks by Merzbow on my computer, it just doesn't fit in with my personal listening habit. At least, I've listened to the first minutes of both tracks and I think that there is nothing wrong with them.

These multiformat or unusual vinyl (or vinyl in general) releases (not to mention the surplus of questionable collaborations) are becoming absurd. It's like a conspiracy against the regular Merzbow CD collector. I guess for example the Fourth Dimension label could've been funky and released the album FID back in 2006 across two and a half LPs and a 3" CD. But they were boring and released it as a double CD. How unfortunate: production would've been cost effective, the album was accordingly cheaply priced, postage was cheap and for those that happen to own a computer or a CD player playback was/is non problematic. Honestly, what the f()ck is going on?!?! (NB. This isn't a stab at Cold Spring by the way, they can do what they want I guess, more just a general comment relating to recent releases and in particular the advancing tide of the hipster vinyl fetish).
PS. The track samples didn't seem to be on the Cold Spring soundcloud anymore...?

Thanks for the information. I find that the idea of having vinyl and CD interact and complement each other to be a great idea, instead of having two formats of the same album. And the cover looks great too.
Congrats on your 200th release.

Has anyone received their copy? Mine's not here yet, not that I'm impatient or anything

It took me a few listens to warm to this release. The loops running underneath the noise are VERY repetitive, to the extent that it was bugging me at first. Having played it a few times I've come to appreciate it a bit more though - the CD is definitely superior to the vinyl in my opinion, which seems more like a warm-up to the main event. The CD seems a lot busier, thicker and generally more interesting.

I listened to the album today on Tidal (which only has the CD on it, not the LP, so I haven't heard that). It's one of the most straightforward and simple (structure-wise) Merzbow albums. I was a bit indifferent to it: it's not bad after all, but it's not memorable or very good either. That's my opinion after one listen anyway.
